Cougars short career:

The Futurity:

Cougar marked a 218.5 in the first go.  However it was his second go that impressed me the most marking a 213.  He handled some very difficult situations with some terrible cows in that run.  He marked a 217.5 in the Semi's. and a 220 early in the finals which placed him 3rd.

4yr Old Year:

He went to Del Mar next and won that show with a 224.  Then in Vegas he was reserve with a 223.5 to Boon San Kitty's 224.

His Injury:

Sometime between Las Vegas and the Super Stakes, Cougar suffered an injury that was not detected outward other than he was definitely off.  In the Super Stakes he made the first and second go but could not hold his stop in the semi run.  He was taken directly to Colorado State University where they could only detect that he was very sore in his sacrum area, maybe some tissue damage.  He was rested.  At the Derby, it was the exact same scenario and again he was taken to CSU.  When extensive testing was performed the prognosis was extreme damage to soft tissue in the sacrum area and that meant a recovery time off at least one year.  That's when Bill and Catherine decided to take Jo Ellard up on her offer to stand Cougar at EE Ranches, Stallion Station. "That was the best decision we could have ever made for him" Catherine said, "That is where he resides today and hopefully where he'll be for all of his life.  We love the facility and all who manage it.  I know Cougar does too".

Quotes:

"I am very sorry that Cougar wasn't able to continue his show career.  He was such a show horse.  I have great expectations in his get.  If they have a fraction of the intelligence, athletic ability, and heart his daddy has, ad a little strength and size from a good mare, who knows, maybe a triple crown winner, at least horse of the year!"  Catherine Lacy

"He is very intelligent, athletic, and has very good breeding.  Those three ingredients will get you a very good horse." - Bill Lacy Crested Butte News December 2003

"He's always been low-headed an sneaks around and stops hard...They don't come around like him very often." - Tim Denton Cutting Horse Chatter
